Unlocking Enhanced Safety with Volvo Cars and Google’s HD Maps Technology

The Volvo EX90 is set to revolutionize the way we understand our environment when driving. With its lidar, cameras and radars, it can accurately detect and measure areas immediately in front of you and farther beyond the curves and turns on the road. To further support this breakthrough, Volvo cars has once again teamed up with Google to introduce their new HD Maps specifically designed for car makers to be integrated into the EX90. This comprehensive map provides detailed, up-to-date data about roadways that ensures all drivers have an accurate view of what lies ahead at all times - making autonomous driving one step closer to reality.

“The addition of Google HD Maps in our future car line-up marks an expansion of our strategic collaboration with Google, reflecting our commitment to work with technology leaders,” says COO and Deputy CEO Javier Varela. “Implementing Google HD Maps in our upcoming cars will help us offer our drivers a more enjoyable driving experience and in future contribute to the introduction of safe autonomous driving.”

By integrating Google's HD map, Volvo will be able to create a sophisticated semi-autonomous driving experience with the latest sensors and technology. The HD map provides accurate lane-level data and localization objects such as signs, making it possible for car makers to implement L2+ and L3 assisted driving features.

This data is combined with other sensors in the Volvo EX90, such as lidar from Luminar and Zenseact software, to be processed by the NVIDIA DRIVE AI platform. Through this integration, Volvo aims to build a reliable, safe and comfortable driving experience for their customers.

“Building on our long history of mapping the world, Google’s new HD map is designed specifically for automakers and provides comprehensive lane-level and localization data that is crucial to powering the next generation of assisted and autonomous driving systems,” says Jorgen Behrens, VP and General Manager of Geo Automotive, Google. “We’re excited to continue partnering with leading automakers like Volvo to improve the safety and comfort of drivers everywhere.”

The collaboration between Volvo and Google is a major step forward in the development of safe, reliable autonomous driving. With the new HD Maps technology integrated into the EX90, drivers will be able to gain an unprecedented understanding of their environment - near or far - without sacrificing detail.

This promises improved safety and convenience for drivers not seen before, making it possible for car makers to implement L2+ and L3 assisted driving features on this cutting-edge vehicle. We look forward to seeing how this partnership continues to drive innovation in autonomous vehicles over time!
