The advantages offered by the new Volvo B4, B5, and B6 engines
November 14 2022,
Among the leading luxury automotive manufacturers when it comes to electrification, Volvo is taking a significant step forward in 2023 by offering every single model with a mild-hybrid powertrain. Consequently, every Volvo vehicle produced in 2023 will be electrified in some way. The introduction of the new Volvo B mild-hybrid engines started in 2022 with the new Volvo XC60, and it will continue next year with every new Volvo model getting mild-hybrid powertrains.
The new engines are known as the Volvo B4, B5, and B6 powertrains, which replace the Volvo T4, T5, and T6 engines, respectively. A 48-volt mild-hybrid system, including a 13-horsepower Integrated Starter Generator, distinguishes the B engines from the T engines. The ISG is used to start the engine and provide a boost to performance when necessary. Additionally, the B4, B5, and B6 engines have a new braking system that allows the energy generated when slowing down to be sent back to the battery for later use.
Volvo B engines offer improved performance as their first benefit. Despite the fact that on paper, engines such as the B5 and B6 powertrains are less powerful than their T counterparts, we need to take into account the boost provided by the ISG. Both the B5 and B6 engines produce 247 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, respectively, and both engines will deliver improved performance over their preceding versions due to the addition of 13 horsepower from the ISG. Additionally, they are much smoother and more refined on the road than previous models.
Moreover, the new Volvo B4, B5, and B6 engines are much more efficient than their predecessors. As a result of the mild hybrid system, a variety of functions are assisted, resulting in greater efficiency.
