Brand-new electric Volvo EX90: What we know so far

On November 9th, Volvo will officially unveil its all-new EX90 premium SUV, a brand-new electric mid-size SUV first announced back in September. As we await the arrival of this impressive luxury SUV with a fully electric powertrain, Volvo has provided more details about the EX90, namely its innovative safety features and advanced bidirectional charging capability. Volvo has also shown us images of the new EX90's interior. Here's everything we know about this new electric vehicle from Volvo as we get closer to the official unveiling.

Luxury electric Volvo EX90 SUV will feature remarkable safety and driver assistance features

In terms of safety, Volvo claims the new EX90 will be unparalleled. This means that it will offer safety features never seen before in another vehicle.  The new EX90 will aim to assist in preventing collisions by focusing on reducing stress, fatigue, and distractions behind the wheel. Volvo engineers have developed a range of driver assistance systems focused on improving these elements with the ultimate goal to reduce serious collisions leading to injuries or death by 20% in the new EX90.

Thanks to 16 ultrasonic sensors, 8 cameras, and 5 radars, the EX90 has the ability to scan its environment in multiple ways, thus receiving a comprehensive overview of everything happening around the vehicle and the driver. LiDAR technology located on the roof detects pedestrians up to 250 meters away, as well as smaller objects up to 120 meters away that are hard to see. No matter what time of day or night you are driving, the LiDAR system will be operational and will contribute to detecting potential dangers much faster. The end result means the driver can react sooner to adjust and avoid these dangers. The EX90 will also have enhanced driver attention monitoring and a host of other driver assistance technologies.

Other impressive safety features include an interior radar system that can detect occupants such as children or pets inside the vehicle and prevent the doors from locking if it is too hot outside. This innovative technology goes beyond simply providing a warning to check the rear seats which of course will also be included in the EX90.

Bidirectional charging capability

The Volvo EX90 will also feature bidirectional charging capability. This impressive feature means that the EX90 can send power back to the grid when needed. For example, if the EX90 is plugged into your home charger and you suddenly have a power loss, the EX90 can actually send power back to the grid and charge your house. You can also use the EX90 to charge another electric vehicle, or appliances.

Volvo's admitted objective with the new EX90 is not just to be an electric vehicle that needs power to operate, but a useful component of a larger electrical grid that can both use power and generate it as well depending on the most efficient solution.

The interior of the EX90 will be luxurious and sustainable

Volvo gave us our first glimpse at the interior of the EX90 recently. We also learned that the seats will be covered with environmentally friendly materials while a range of recycled materials are used across the interior. You will find recycled plastic bottles as well as other recycled plastics and bio-based materials across the construction of the EX90. Volvo says that roughly 110 pounds of environmentally friendly materials are used in the construction of the new EX90.

So far, we know that the EX90 will be the new benchmark when it comes to safety while also providing enough power for bidirectional charging capability. We don't have all the details on the powertrain or the performance, but that should come on November 9 when the EX90 is unveiled.
